There was a large moorland fire on the Elan Valley Estate during the weekend of 21st/22nd April 2007. This is the first such fire on the Estate for a long time.
The areas affected are (roughly)
Abergwesyn Common, the fire spread North from here.
Drygarn Fawr
It spread as far East as Nant Marchnant and as far North as the Claerwen river. The western boundary is unknown, but it did not reach the forestry area.
The advice from the Estate suggest that the area still usable by walkers, but is now very black!

April 2007 - The Mid Wales Panel is fortunate to have co-operation and support from Landowners, Farmers, Rangers and residents. Please ensure this continues by sticking to waymarked paths and not crossing walls or fences, being reasonable if questioned and by taking every care to leave the area as you found it. Be sensible - if you come across a locked gate or something you HAVE to climb, remove your rucksacks, cross the obstacle carefully and make a note of its location for us.

April 2007 - Re-routing of Bridleway at Bodtalog farm, Cwmystwyth - Rhayader road. This bridleway has been officially re-routed to the west of the farm, no groups should now go through the farmyard. It is waymarked and there is a new signpost from the road opposite the layby at GR 856 747.

April 2007 - New stiles South of Ty Newydd Farm, Cwmystwyth. The farmer at Ty Newydd is very supportive of our work, but has had problems with groups and other walkers crossing and damaging fences. Please note that there are 2 crossing points that the farmer has put in on the behalf of walkers. They are marked by white planks and are at GR 812 724 and 816 733. Please respect this when planning routes to and from Cwmystwyth.

April 2007 - FIRE RISK WARNING There could be a HIGH/EXTREME risk of fire on the moors during the period of your venture: Please ensure that all participants are aware of the possibility of high fire risk. Do NOT light stoves on the moors and do NOT discard matches or cigarette ends; these could easily start a fire unwittingly.

25th January 2007 - Thanks to all the panel members, new and old who attended the Panel weekend in Borth.

31st October 2006 - End of another season, many thanks to all those that visited the area, especially to the hard working Panel members for their efforts throughout the season.
